This is a replica of Akay's first black book. Production of the original began in the fall of 1986, when 16-year-old Akay glued a spray paint swatch to the first page of an unpretentious, standard-sized sketchbook. Through his nightly additions of sketches, photographs, and newspaper clippings until the spring of 1990, the prolific graffiti writer's personal document became this unintentional chronicle of the Stockholm graffiti era. There is a brief loophole in Akay's meticulous record-keeping from just before Christmas 1988, when his father confiscated his original black book and locked it in a bank safe deposit box. His father threatened to throw him into the fire if Akay didn't stop painting graffiti. A few weeks after Black Book was taken hostage, two police officers showed up at Akay's father's home with search warrants. Akay and Weird were instructed to wait in the kitchen while the police searched Akay's basement bedroom for evidence to frame their charges against him—things like photos or sketches, or better yet, all that evidence conveniently taped into a book along with dates and locations written next to the pieces. But thanks to his father's unsuccessful attempts at parental blackmail (and not thanks to his father's wife, who constantly offered coffee and snacks to the police), the police found nothing incriminating. The only slightly suspicious thing the police found was an elaborately curated display of 280 paint sprays, Akay's most prized possession at the time – after the imprisoned Black Book – that brightened up his windowless room. Now, more than 30 years later, long after the content can be used as evidence in any prosecutable crimes or for manipulative parenting tactics, the Black Book from Akay's teenage years has been reproduced and made available for the first time.
