This volume is the second edition of the trilogy DEKADES (vol. 1 1990-2000 / vol. 3 2010-2020), which presents 30 years of graffiti in Berlin. By choosing from thousands of photographs, a unique picture of the development of the graffiti subculture in Berlin is created. In addition, the authors' abundance of personal texts provides an intimate look at their experiences and perspectives. On the one hand, these texts give a very vivid picture of Berlin's graffiti scene, and on the other hand, they allow the reader to experience the Berlin of yesteryear. Berlin graffiti in the 1900s was marked by transformation and further development. Many writers from the 1990s gave up painting illegal graffiti, a few stayed, and many people, especially from the eastern part of the city, moved away. After the "wild style" dictates of the 1990s, letter design forms are now pluralized. The repression of illegal graffiti and the professionalization of writers in dealing with it are intensifying, and the number of graffiti applied to trains is increasing enormously. A large part of the illustrations in the book deal with the discipline of train writing. Another big theme of DECADES 2 is the massive change in the look of Berlin, especially in the eastern part of the city. The brown, crumbling facades and gaps between the buildings disappear along with the fire walls. With them, graffiti streetpieces have been lost for decades. Prenzlauer Berg is particularly affected, nowhere else in Berlin is the radical transformation of the city as evident as here. Berlin is getting a new modern face. The writers portrayed in this volume talk about their personal development, how they perceived the transformation of the city, and how their styles and aesthetic appreciation influenced their artistic creation and individual contemplation.
