Markus Genesius, born in Bremen in 1974, is one of the most important representatives of the second generation of the German graffiti and street art scene. After many years of worldwide activity under the nickname WOW123, he recently moved to contemporary art without losing sight of his original roots. His path led him from classic stylistic writing of graffiti design to stylistic development and his own new artistic language, with which he entered a different environment, into traditional fine art. Markus Genesius moves between urban art and the classical art scene and works in parallel in both fields. On his canvases, he works on a mixture of constructive concepts and free, intuitive, gestural painting in the tradition of Art Informel or Abstract Expressionism of the 1950s. On the one hand, he creates dynamic, moving images in bold colours and abstract compositions of a minimalist look, compact free-standing figures or free geometric constructions of controlled dynamics that completely stand out from them. This book is the first retrospective overview that documents in many illustrations the development of Markus Genesius both in the field of graffiti and urban art, as well as in the classical art business from its beginnings to the present, and in texts illuminates his work from different perspectives.
